history

After the formation of the independent mayor's office in Mülheim, the authority of the rural communities to share the old town cemetery expired on October 24, 1878. The local councils of the communities of Holthausen and Menden therefore decided, after a brief discussion about the location, in August 1878 with the approval of the royal Prussian government to purchase a 2¼ Acres of large land and the creation of a cemetery for both communities. The "Communal Cemetery" was inaugurated on October 25, 1878. After the incorporation of the municipality of Holthausen into Mülheim an der Ruhr in 1904, the cemetery remained as the common cemetery of the municipality of Mülheim for the district of Holthausen and the rural municipality of Menden. On August 6, 1917, the cemetery was closed due to lack of space for burials in row graves. The last burials in hereditary graves took place in 1965.
