The cemetery III (also Upper cemetery called) was one of the old cemeteries of the city of Gotha .

history

The tombstone of Johann Ludwig Böhner is today in the main cemetery

In 1843, Friedhof III was laid out as a northern extension of Friedhof II above the former Friedhofsstraße (since 1893 Karl-Schwarz-Straße). Since it was built on the former property of the gardener Graefenhan, the cemetery was jokingly referred to as Graefenhans Gottesacker . He was also recorded on official maps as Oberer Gottesacker . There were about 260 graves on it.

By resolution of the city council on January 15, 1892, the cemetery was closed for burials for reasons of the health police. In the following year, the Friedhofsstraße running along the southern boundary wall was renamed Karl-Schwarz-Straße.

In 1969 all grave monuments were cleared away. Only the tombstone of Johann Ludwig Böhner was preserved and later moved to the main cemetery in Gotha . The only tombstone in the cemetery that still stands in its original location is that of Georg Friedrich Blödner (1803–1880) and his wife Susanne, b. Brand (1806–1866), which was preserved thanks to its location directly on the eastern cemetery wall.

In 1968/69 the pupils of the nearby Arnoldischule and the members of the sports club "Arnoldi 67" built a school's own sports facility on the former cemetery grounds. This had to give way to the construction of a swimming pool in 1986, which was demolished in November 2016.
