Pankow V cemetery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pankow V cemetery is a state-owned cemetery in the Pankow district in Berlin . It is located north of the intersection of Germanenstrasse and Tuchmacherweg, about one kilometer from the Pankow III cemetery in the direction of Wilhelmsruh . On August 1, 2007, the cemetery was closed. Due to the historical development of the city, Berlin cemeteries are numerous and spread over the city area.

history

Queen Elisabeth Christine , the wife of Friedrich II. , Had an area in the Schönholzer Heide planted with mulberry trees in 1763 , which were intended to raise silkworms . In this context, twelve colonist families were settled, for whom a single-class school and a cemetery with a small celebration hall were built.

In 1909 the community of Niederschönhausen acquired the surrounding area on Germanenstrasse from the Treasury to create a second community cemetery , as the area of the existing cemetery was too small for the growing population of the community of Niederschönhausen. The first burial took place in this cemetery on October 4, 1909.

Monument status

In 2000 the cemetery with the celebratory hall and the morgue was entered as a whole in the Berlin State Monument List. The former morgue, which was built in neo-Gothic style in 1895 on the Schönholz cemetery, in the back part of the former, is worth seeing . It later served as accommodation for the cemetery gardeners. The fire damage probably only occurred after the cemetery was closed. This small building was supplemented in 1910 in a central cemetery location by a celebration hall. This building was also reconstructed and renovated in 2004 with Gothic elements. Due to the closure of the cemetery, the celebration hall is no longer used. The monument status requires the building to be preserved; so must be looked for a new use.

The war cemetery

As a cemetery for Schönholz, Pankow V is one of the small cemeteries in the old district. A significant expansion as the 5th municipal cemetery in Pankow took place due to the increase in the number of deaths in World War II . In connection with the establishment of cemetery VI on the grounds of Schönholzer Heide, this cemetery (V) was also expanded again. Due to the dissolution of the park and Schönholz Palace, the area deeper into the park was enlarged despite protests from the residents. The cemetery thus covered its present area of 17,845 m².

400 meters north on the opposite side of the Germanenstraße is the Soviet Schönholz Memorial from the end of the Second World War , in which 13,000 individual graves of fallen and dead are under permanent use rights.

Closure in 2007

Due to the overall decreasing space requirement in cemeteries, Cemetery V was closed by resolution of the Pankow District Council in August 2007 without the right to subsequent burial. After the statutory rest period of 20 years for all grave sites and a ten-year rest period, the area can - according to the current status - be used again for the park behind it in 2037. A subsequent burial for existing grave sites is not possible in this cemetery according to the BVV resolution. According to the law, the "substitute right of use" was granted for these locations in cemetery III , and if so desired, also in other state-owned Pankow cemeteries.
