Süßenbrunn cemetery
The cemetery Süßenbrunn is a cemetery in the 22nd Viennese district Donaustadt . The cemetery was inaugurated in 1893 and is one of the smallest urban cemeteries in Vienna.
location
The Süßenbrunn cemetery is located in the far north of the Danube city, east of Süßenbrunn in the middle of vegetable gardens and fields (Friedhofweg 282). The cemetery covers an area of 5,053 square meters and is home to 419 grave sites. This makes it the fourth smallest city cemetery and the city cemetery with the smallest number of grave sites.
history
Süßenbrunn originally belonged to the Gerasdorf parish . Since the parish church was three kilometers from the village and was difficult to reach in bad weather, the Süßenbrunn municipal council decided in 1835 to build a chapel, which was consecrated in 1839. However, the dead were still buried in Gerasdorf. After the Gerasdorf cemetery was classified as insufficient for epidemic cases by the authorities in 1891, the municipality of Süßenbrunn was commissioned to build its own cemetery. This was consecrated on May 22, 1893.
In 1938, after the incorporation of Süßenbrunn, the cemetery was taken over into the administration of the City of Vienna and assigned to the "Asperner Friedhof operations center". After the Second World War, the cemetery buildings and the enclosure were renovated. Since the Asperner Friedhof operations center was closed, the cemetery administration handed over the laying out facility to the burial site in Deutsch-Wagram in 1954 . The Süßenbrunn cemetery was subsequently declared an election cemetery.
The cemetery was expanded in the 1980s. The areas were consecrated on October 30, 1987 as part of an ecumenical word service.
