The Friedrich Wilhelm Foundation is a legal foundation under private law with its seat in Aachen . It was founded on May 15, 1865. Its aim is to promote teaching and research at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen . Today Generali Deutschland Holding AG is the legal successor to the founding company and the economic sponsor of the foundation.

The Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich-Wilhelm, the later 99-day Emperor Friedrich III. , received in 1858 during a stopover in Herbesthal / Ostbelgien on his return trip from London to Berlin, presented by the incumbent Aachen district president Friedrich von Kühlwetter , a donation of 5,000 thalers from the Aachen citizens for charitable purposes.
