The Friedrich Wilhelm Foundation is a legal foundation under private law with its seat in Aachen . It was founded on May 15, 1865. Its aim is to promote teaching and research at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen . Today Generali Deutschland Holding AG is the legal successor to the founding company and the economic sponsor of the foundation.

The Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich-Wilhelm, the later 99-day Emperor Friedrich III. , received in 1858 during a stopover in Herbesthal / Ostbelgien on his return trip from London to Berlin, presented by the incumbent Aachen district president Friedrich von Kühlwetter , a donation of 5,000 thalers from the Aachen citizens for charitable purposes. Friedrich-Wilhelm made this donation as a grant for the establishment of a new polytechnic school in Aachen. Together with a donation of 20,000 thalers from the former Aachener Feuer-Versicherungs-Gesellschaft, today's AachenMünchener Versicherungs AG, this donation formed the basis for the non-profit Friedrich Wilhelm Foundation , which was then launched in the year the foundation stone of the university was laid on the initiative of the incumbent director of Insurance company Friedrich Adolph Brüggemann was founded on May 15, 1865.
