Friedrich Frank (born January 22, 1884 in Rendsburg , † September 10, 1960 in Hamburg ) was a German politician of the SPD . Before 1933 he was Mayor of Bergedorf and after 1945 Senator in Hamburg.

Life

After attending school, Frank completed an apprenticeship as a plumber in 1899 and joined the German Metalworkers' Association in 1903 . In 1910 he took over the German House in Bergedorf as landlord . He led this until he was appointed full-time managing director of the metal workers' association in Bergedorf in 1913. From 1918 he was editor-in-chief of the SPD newspaper Bergedorf-Sander Volksblatt . After the National Socialist seizure of power, he was imprisoned in Fuhlsbüttel prison from September 3 to October 3, 1933 for alleged possession of weapons , but then released without trial. Since he could not find employment at first, he had to stay with his relatives in Rendsburg. It was not until 1936 that he managed to take up a job as an assistant in tax matters. After the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler , he was imprisoned again in Fuhlsbüttel from August 2 to September 23, 1944 (as part of the thunderstorm campaign ).

After the end of the war, Frank was appointed head of the Bergedorf local office by the British occupying forces on July 1, 1945 and was supposed to organize the administration there. The Friedrich-Frank-Bogen in Hamburg-Bergedorf has been named after Frank since 1968 .

MP

Frank had been a member of the SPD since 1905 . In 1918 he was elected to the city council of what was then Bergedorf. He was a member of it until he was elected mayor in 1931. From 1924 he was one of the Bergedorf representatives in the State Committee of the State of Hamburg. From 1928 to 1933 he was a member of the Hamburg parliament . His mandate ended with the exclusion of the SPD members by the National Socialists . From 1949 to 1957 Frank was again a member of the Hamburg parliament.

Public offices

On October 4, 1931, Frank was elected mayor of Bergedorf. The National Socialists forced him to resign on March 28, 1933 and replaced him with Albrecht Dreves . From November 15, 1946 to December 2, 1953, Frank was a member of the Hamburg Senate and was posted to the Food and Agriculture Authority as President. He also headed the Senate Office for District Affairs. As such, he drafted the district administration reform of 1949, which led to the creation of the district administration and district assemblies , which in principle still exist today .
