Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research

The Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI; formerly Friedrich Miescher Institute ) is a private Swiss research institute based in Basel that conducts basic research in the field of molecular biology .

It was founded on April 10, 1970 by the companies Ciba and Geigy and is named after Friedrich Miescher , who discovered the nucleic acid . The first director was Hubert Bloch , former head of the pharmaceutical research department at Ciba and professor at the University of Basel . The institute is affiliated as an independent foundation with the University of Basel and with the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research. It should not be confused with the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory of the Max Planck Society.

Today's research focuses on control mechanisms of cell growth , neurobiology and epigenetics .

The current director is Dirk Schübeler .
