Friedrich Moritz Stapff (born October 26, 1836 in Gerstungen , † October 17, 1895 in Tanga , German East Africa ) was a German geologist. The Gotthard tunnel construction in Switzerland was successfully carried out thanks to the longitudinal profile he designed and implemented .

Life

He was the son of the official commissioner Georg Caspar Stapff, who worked in Gerstungen. Stapff then lived in Tiefenort and studied from 1854 to 1856 as a registered foreigner at the Bergakademie Freiberg . After completing his studies, he went into Swedish services and worked a. a. as a mining engineer in Falun . Stapff then worked in the United States of America. In 1873 he was employed by the Gotthard Railway Company to handle all the necessary geological investigations. In doing so, Stapff created the first longitudinal profile of the tunnel and collected a corresponding fist-sized reference specimen from all the rock layers. This collection of around 150 stones is located in the Swiss Museum of Transport, among other places.

After completing the tunnel construction according to Stapff's plans, he moved to Berlin and worked as a mining expert in various European countries. In 1893, Stapff completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Dynamic Geology. Dr. phil. Stapff then lived in Weißensee near Berlin. In August 1895, Stapff traveled to German East Africa on behalf of the German East African Society to investigate the alluvial gold deposits in the Usambaratal. During the expedition, which was supposed to be completed in December 1895, Stapff fell ill and died. Shortly before his death, he found a gold-bearing quartz deposit in October. The English mining engineer Martin, who continued Stapff's work, examined the five-kilometer-long gold quartz vein described by Stapff and considered it worthwhile to be mined .

Stapff remained connected to the Bergakademie Freiberg after completing his studies and supported the facility with a donation.

From 1883 to 1886 he was a member of the Prussian Geological State Institute (PGLA)
