The Friedrich Otto Schmidt company manufactures home furnishings based on drafts or antique models. It was founded in 1853. This company became famous through the brothers Max, Otto and Leo Schmidt, who maintained a friendly relationship with many artists from the turn of the century. The collaboration with Adolf Loos was particularly successful, and many furnishings were created based on his designs. The other way around, Loos was also inspired by this company and repeatedly used the so-called elephant-trunk table , which was made by the foreman Berka of the FO Schmidt company based on designs by Max Schmidt.

According to information disseminated in 2019, a hotel is to be set up on property 9, Währinger Straße 28, where the company has been active for decades. The street facade of the building was unchanged in November 2019, the historic company logo intact.
