The Friends General Conference (FGC) is one of the three largest Quaker umbrella organizations , along with the Friends United Meeting and Evangelical Friends International, in which annual and monthly meetings in North America are mainly represented. The main US office is in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania .
Alignment
Each of these organizations has a slightly different theological orientation. The FGC unites Quaker groups with unprogrammed devotion, i.e. without liturgy and pastoral sermon and leadership. FGC members are more prone to liberal theological views and lifestyles than members of the other two organizations (and the average perceptions of US citizens as well).
To meet
Once a year in July, a conference is organized by the FGC in which its members participate. In addition, the FGC has its own publishing house and supports individual groups and individuals with the provision of materials. The FGC is represented by 170 delegates from 112 affiliated groups. The employees are provided by their members and some of their work is voluntary and free of charge.
Guiding principles
- Faith is based on direct experience with God ( faith is based on direct experience of God )
- Our lives witness this experience individually and corporately .
- In response to the existence of God in everyone, we form closed communities and maintain them ( by answering that of God in everyone, we build and sustain inclusive community ).
Ecumenism
The conference is a member of the World Council of Churches .
