Friendship (ship)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Friendship was a First Fleet transport ship . It was built in Scarborough in 1784 . She was a brig of 278 tons and the smallest transport ship in the fleet. Their captain was Francis Walton , the ship's doctor Thomas Arndell .

The ship ran out of Portsmouth on May 13, 1787 . It carried 76 male and 21 female convicts. The latter were distributed to other ships at the Cape of Good Hope to make room for the cattle taken on board here.

The Friendship reached Port Jackson , Australia on January 26, 1788 .

On July 14, 1788, she left again with the Alexander . However, the crews of both ships were so badly affected by scurvy off the coast of Borneo that there were only enough able-bodied men left for one ship. The crew was therefore transferred to the Alexander and the Friendship sunk .
