National Salvation Front

The National Salvation Front ( Russian: Фронт национа́льного спасе́ния (ФНС) ) was an umbrella organization of several Russian parties and movements that opposed the policies of the then Russian president and his government in the 1990s . The front united nationalist and communist organizations (including the KPRF Gennady Zyuganov ), but also some national-socialist groups. All affiliates, representing very different branches of the political spectrum, rejected the reforms of the Yeltsin government .

The front was the first example in the history of Russia of a union of diverse political movements on the basis of statism . In the broad coalition there was an effective distribution of activities: the right cared more about ideology, the left dealt with mass actions.

The chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Salvation Front was Ilya Konstantinov . In September 1993, after the Russian constitutional crisis , Konstantinov began to form fighters in support of the Russian parliament. Many members of the front took part in the support of the parliament building; after the suppression of the resistance, the front (like many of its member organizations) was banned by Yeltsin's decree.

However, at the beginning of 1992 there were calls to found a new opposition movement to unite the various opponents of the Yeltsin government. On October 1, 1992, the communist newspaper Sovetskaya Rossiya published an appeal “To the Citizens of Russia” (“К гражданам России”), which contained an appeal to establish a united front to save the fatherland. 38 opposition politicians who signed the appeal also formed the National Salvation Front Organizing Committee.

The founding congress began on October 24, 1992; 1428 delegates and 675 guests from 103 cities from all republics of the former Soviet Union (except Uzbekistan and Tajikistan) took part in the congress. Congress passed a manifesto describing the intentions of the front. It was stated that the country was on the verge of civil war, chaos and anarchy and that the policy of Yeltsin and his troops was "the policy of high treason" ("политика национальной измены"). The front sought a change in the constitutional system and a gradual "rebirth" of Russia within its historical borders (or within the borders of the Soviet Union in 1975). After the suppression of the anti-Yeltsin uprising in October 1993, in which the FNS leadership was involved, the organization was banned by Yeltsin's decree.
