Front line probation
Probation at the front refers to a special military deployment during a war or in armed conflict, mostly in the front line.
In the German Wehrmacht there were two mandatory types of frontline probation during the Second World War :
- Officer candidates completed their front-line probation after training in the garrisons - i. d. Usually three months - with their traditional units.
- Soldiers of all ranks could be sentenced to probation at the front by a military tribunal or an authorized commander could be punished for an offense. In some cases this also took the form of a conversion of an initially imposed prison sentence. These soldiers were assigned to special units, the probation battalions , where they were able to regain their “soldiery honor” through special efforts.
