This article describes the type of ship Frontrunner , which first came into service in 2003.

The Frontrunner is a completely redeveloped barge with the apartment and wheelhouse in the bow area. This design means that the cargo space can be used optimally and transport more cargo / containers than a conventional ship. In 2005 this design was awarded the CBOB ( Christian Inland Shipping Entrepreneur Association ).

The first front runner MS Cornelia was put into service in early November 2003. The hull was built in Ukraine , the completion was carried out by Teus Vlot in Sliedrecht . With a length of 84.63 m, a width of 11.45 m and a draft of 3.20 m, the ship can load 2,126 tons. In the container journey, 11 TEU can be placed one behind the other instead of 9–10 with conventional ships. That is 128 TEU with three layers and 172 TEU with four layers.

In 2006 the ship was lengthened to 110 m. With an empty weight of 700 tons and a deadweight of 2,945 tons, 236 TEU can be loaded in four layers, 28 more than a normal 110 m ship. With 850 tons of ballast and three layers of containers, the ship is only 6.55 m high and can therefore also be used in North Holland . Despite the extension, fuel consumption has remained the same.

The two-storey apartment and the hydraulically height-adjustable wheelhouse are in the bow area. This arrangement also means that there is no blind spot for the skipper. One deck of the apartment is within the hull of the ship. The engine room is in the stern area.
