Frontstalag 211

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Frontstalag 211 was a front main camp for French prisoners of war of the Wehrmacht in the Second World War in Sarrebourg .

history

Frontstalag 211 was established in June 1940 and existed until November 1940. After the Wehrmacht attacked the Maginot Line in June 1940, French prisoners of war were housed there. These were distributed over three barracks: Caserne Dessirier as an infirmary, Caserne Rabier with an occupancy of 1,800 prisoners of war and Ulanenkaserne (Caserne Malleray) with an occupancy of 2,000 officers and 8,000 men (as of June 24, 1940). The barracks were in poor condition and the rooms were overcrowded. The people of Sarrebourg were friendly and helpful. On July 11, 1940, prisoners from Alsace and the Moselle were released if they did not refuse to do so. From November 15, 1940 and until the end of 1941, Frontstalag 211 became Stalag XII F and used the Ulanenkaserne for it.
