Frost screen (construction)

A frost screen is a protective measure against frost damage to buildings.

According to DIN EN 1997-1 / Eurocode 7, or the extended versions of DIN 1054 , structures must be effectively protected from damage caused by frost. In the case of shallow foundations such as floor slabs, water must be prevented from penetrating under the floor slab and causing damage to the structure due to freezing.

One possibility is a frost apron in the form of a vertical shield in the ground. An alternative, especially in the case of highly insulated floor slabs , is a horizontal frost shield .

Execution method

To prevent moisture from freezing below the floor slab, a horizontal layer of insulation is placed around the building with a width of 60 to 120 cm. A layer of soil is placed over the thermal insulation installed in this way. Comprehensive earthworks and concreting work are not necessary. Common perimeter insulation such as XPS insulation materials are usually used as insulation . As an alternative, foam glass gravel layers or other insulation approved for the ground can also be used.

The rising geothermal energy below the insulation (frost screen) creates a frost-free area around the house. The formation of ice lenses below the structure is prevented and the requirements of the DIN standards are taken into account.
