The DIN standard DIN 1054 of the Deutsches Institut für Normung eV regulates the safety certificates in geotechnical engineering that are valid for Germany . In terms of content, it is divided into twelve sections. The first two sections name areas of application of the standard and make statements about the normative reference. In section three, terms and general symbols are introduced. General rules for proof of safety are explained in section four. In the following section five, the subject of subsoil and the necessary investigations are defined in more detail.

Section six characterizes the actions and resistances of the soil. Sections seven to ten deal with different types of foundations, such as shallow foundations or pile foundations . Section eleven provides information on floating and hydraulic bottom failure . Overall stability is explained in the last section.

The standard defines supplementary provisions for the German national application document for Eurocode 7 (DIN EN 1997-1), which contains standardized European regulations on geotechnical engineering.
