Frotho III.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Frotho III. was a legendary king of Denmark . He was mentioned by Saxo Grammaticus in the Gesta Danorum and in the Skjöldunga saga.

He was a son and successor of Fridlevus I. Frotho ruled together with twelve "Diars" . He fought against Slavs ( sclavi ) on the Cimbria peninsula and defeated them. Then he asked for the hand of the "Hun" daughter Hanunda. When she refused, he tried a sorceress to change her mind. Hanunda became his wife and gave birth to a son Fridlevus. Then she went back to her father.

Frotho married Alvhild, a daughter of the Norwegian King Gothar. The King of the Huns attacked Frotho with an alliance of several princes. After three days "one could walk over the mountains of corpses through the water". Frotho won after seven days, but let the princes return to their territories (Holmgard = Novgorod, Koenugard = Kiev, Revallis = Reval / Tallinn, Lapland, Eistland = Baltic States).

Frotho's successor was his son Fridlevus.
