Frowin (legendary figure)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Frowin , also Freawine or Frowinus, is a ruler of Schleswig who is mentioned in the Gesta Danorum and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle . Frowin is said to be an ancestor of the Kings of Wessex . Later sources describe him only as the son of Frithugar and father of Wig .

In the Gesta Danorum , Frowin is portrayed as Offa's father-in-law , whose father Wermund liked Frowin, as well as Ket and Wig.

Frowin was challenged by the Swedish king Athisl and killed in a duel. He was later avenged in a duel by his sons Ket and Wig. Ket and Wig fought in twos against Athisl, which was viewed as a national disgrace. Only her brother-in-law Offa was able to ward off this shame by killing two Saxons on his own. This fact is referred to in the Widsith as a duel against Myrgings.
