Victoria Kawesa (born April 12, 1975 in Kampala , Uganda ) is a Swedish politician and feminist. From March to September 2017 she was party leader of Feministiskt initiative .

Life

Kawesa was born in Uganda and came to Sweden as a refugee with her sister and mother at the age of nine . She grew up in the Stockholm suburbs of Tensta and Husby.

Kawesa is a PhD student in gender sciences at Linköping University and researches black feminism and whiteness . She teaches gender sciences at Södertörn University in Stockholm.

Kawesa is actively involved in the feminist party Feministiskt, with a focus on the fight against racism . Kawesa is the party spokeswoman for anti-racism. Since the beginning of her political career, she has received a large number of threatening letters and emails. On March 24, 2017, she was proactively elected party leader of Feministiskt alongside Gudrun Schyman , making her the first black party leader in Sweden. Commenting on her election, Kawesa said: "If this group [note: black people] is represented, more people can identify and believe in politics and that they can be part of Sweden." In September 2017, she stepped down from the position of Party chairman back.

In 2014 she was co-author of a report on the situation of black people in Sweden and afrophobia in Sweden. The report was published by the Mångkulturellt Centrum on behalf of the government employment agency.

In December 2017, she was fined for a copyright infringement in a PowerPoint presentation.
