Gerd (Gudrun) Maria Schyman (born June 9, 1948 in Täby ) is a Swedish politician. From 1993 to January 2003 she was chairman of the Swedish Vänsterpartiet (Left Party). Due to allegations of tax fraud, she had to resign, but initially remained a member of the Left Party. In 2004 she left the party to work for Swedish feminism . She was a member of the Swedish Parliament from 1988 to 2006 , and from 2004 as an independent MP . From 2005 to 2011 she was party leader of the Feminist Initiative (FI; Feminist Initiative) party, which she co-founded .

Political career

Schyman began her political career in the Marxist-Leninistiska Kampförbundet (Marxist-Leninist Kampfbund). In 1977 she moved to Vänsterparti Kommunisterna (Left Party the Communists, renamed Vänsterpartiet in 1990) and was elected chairman of the party after the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union in 1993.

During her time as Chair, the number of Vänsterparti MPs doubled. Feminism became the party's ideological base. In 2003 she was accused of misleading the tax authorities by attempting to make illegal tax deductions. Schyman then resigned; her temporary successor was Ulla Hoffman . The criminal proceedings ended with a penalty order for a 50-day fine. In addition, she had to pay 21,750 crowns to the state treasury.

In summer 2005 she founded the feminist initiative party together with the literary scholar Ebba Witt-Brattström, the university lecturer for gender studies and homosexual activist Tiina Rosenberg and the student politician Sofia Karlsson . In the Reichstag elections in 2006 , this won 0.68 percent of the vote and thus missed the four percent hurdle for entry into the Reichstag. In 2009 Feministiskt was an initiative candidate for the 2009 European elections and achieved 2.2 percent of the votes cast. In the 2010 Reichstag elections , Schyman's party again missed the four percent hurdle with 0.4 percent of the votes cast.
