history

In 1972 the 250 m long pedestrian zone was built.

Tegel market hall

The Tegel market hall was opened in 1908 as a private weekly market by Oswald Prenzel. The building, which was partially destroyed in the Second World War, was completely rebuilt. In 1958 a permanent roof was installed on the market hall. After the death of the founder, son Walter Prenzel took over the management, who built a completely new hall. On March 23, 1972, what was then the market hall opened its doors in the Tegel Center. From 2016 to 2019, the market hall dealers moved into the former Hertie building due to the renovation. The market hall was reopened on March 10, 2017.

Hertie department store

After the Hertie department store was closed in 2009, the goal of the Gorkistraße pedestrian zone project was to add one storey to the Hertie department store and give it a new facade. In 2016, construction work began on the pedestrian street under the name Pedestrian Zone Gorkistraße. Attempts to re-establish a Karstadt store in Tegel had failed after the Hertie closure. Other large tenants could not be found either.

On July 9, 2015, City Councilor Martin Lambert announced the sale of the Hertie House and the Tegel Center on Gorkistraße to HGHI Holding GmbH.

On June 8, 2018, the laying of the foundation stone for a “Karstadt” was celebrated in Gorkistraße.
