Joint inscription

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a joint inscriptions short texts on ancient Egyptian called coffins, which are located on the wooden planks, especially in the joints between the individual coffin walls. These texts were attached before a coffin was assembled and were no longer visible when the coffin was finished. One variant is short texts on dowels that were used in coffin construction.

Joint inscriptions are mainly known from coffins from the Middle Kingdom , but also occur afterwards. These are mostly short sayings that are recited by deities and usually deal with the integrity of the mummy . The sayings of the Middle Kingdom appear in the New Kingdom on the Sargaußenseiten and then also become part of the Book of the Dead entry 151.
