The Funicolare di Montecatini connects the core city of Montecatini Terme with the upper district of Montecatini Alto . It is the oldest funicular in Italy still in operation .

history

The idea of ​​a connection from the upper part of the village, then called Castello , to Bagni (lower part, today Montecatini Terme) came about by the engineer Alessandro Ferretti , who came from Genoa . He received city permission on October 8, 1896 to carry out the project. The railway was inaugurated on June 4, 1898. Giuseppe Verdi was present at the inauguration .

From 1977 to August 3, 1982 the cable car was modernized.

Data

The cable car route is approx. 1050 meters long and overcomes a difference in altitude of 202 meters. The average slope is 19.65%, the steepest slope is 38.5%. The journey takes around ten minutes.
