Under function monitoring a new one is sociological method understood that from the perspective of the observer third order the self-descriptions of functional systems observed.

For example, sociology can be viewed as a second-order observation as it tracks, systematizes and describes the observations of society. The sociological description of society is then observed, for example whether the differentiation of modern society according to functional systems is described. The observation of the results of sociology is now the observation of the third order. The results from the second order are viewed from a distance and thus become the object of observation itself.
