Veneer plywood (abbreviation FU ), also called veneer board or plywood board for simplicity , is a symmetrically constructed wood-based material made of several, crosswise glued layers of peeled veneer . The number of veneer layers is therefore almost always uneven (exception: a thicker middle layer is made from two parallel layers for manufacturing reasons). The panel structure and its specific strength properties result from the number and arrangement of the veneer layers. A board over 12 mm thick and with at least five layers is called a multiplex board .

Properties and qualities

By gluing the veneer sheets crosswise, the wood is severely restricted in its natural properties of swelling and shrinking, thus ensuring good stamina. In addition, the crosswise gluing results in a comparable flexural strength in the two main axes of the panel.

Veneer plywood can be coated and surface treated. The grain direction of the two outer cover layers must be parallel so that the board does not warp. In addition, the same coating material should be used on both sides.

Special versions of veneer plywood are, for example, construction plywood (BFU) with particularly high flexural strength, metal-reinforced veneer plywood or vapor barrier panels , which have a middle layer made of aluminum sheet. Molded plywood also consists of veneer layers glued crosswise at 90 ° - mainly beech peeled veneers are used here.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing process from rotary veneer

The dried wood layers are glued, placed crosswise on top of one another and pressed under the influence of heat. Special presses enable the production of molded plywood . The veneer layers are not pressed flat like a plate, but shaped in special shapes to create seat shells, panels, etc.

use

Because of its good dimensional and shape stability, this material is used in furniture and interior construction for rear walls, cladding and fillings, and also for furniture bodies and worktops. The material is also available as external plywood and can be used as such in damp, wet or cold rooms. In addition, it is used in the construction of vehicles and wagons as well as packaging material.

Economical meaning

Measured against the total production of plywood , veneer panels made up about 12.6% with a production of 22,000 m³ in 2008. In 2009 there were six veneer plywood manufacturers in Germany .
