A special dummy used in dog training is called a feed dummy , especially when training hunting dogs and during dummy training . It is a bag made of sturdy fabric with a zipper and is filled with dog food or dog snacks for use .

The feed dummy serves as a substitute for game. Due to the smell of food and possibly the movement of the object, the dog will perceive the food dummy as prey. He is hidden or thrown to the dog after successful "hunt" for handler retrieves are. If the dog brings the dummy to the dog handler, he can open the zipper and reward the dog with the food. In this way, the dog's retrieval behavior is positively reinforced . The dog learns that it is worthwhile to bring prey to its handler.
