Gábor Darvas

Gábor Darvas [ ˈgaːbor ˈdɒrvɒʃ ] (born January 18, 1911 in Szatmárnémeti ( Hungary ), today Satu Mare ( Romania ); † February 18, 1985 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian composer and musicologist .

Gábor Darvas (until 1952 Gábor Steinberger ) was born in Szatmárnémeti in 1911. In 1918 he moved with his family to Budapest , where he attended high school and music academy. From the age of nine he learned the piano , between 1926 and 1932 he studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, first bassoon , and later composition as a student of Zoltán Kodály .

In the thirties his orchestral compositions were performed in concerts and on the Hungarian radio. In 1939 he left Hungary and lived in Chile during the Second World War . For a while he was a close colleague of Erich Kleiber . He later wrote articles for music magazines.

In 1948 he returned to Hungary and worked until 1972 as a musical consultant in various cultural institutions, including the Hungarian radio and the Hungaroton record company.

In 1951 he began all over with his compositional activity. He also dealt with the development and publication, processing and instrumentation of musical treasures of European music history as well as the writing of numerous specialist books.
