A single file is a form of locomotion in which the participants walk one behind the other in a row. Often a local or experienced participant takes the lead. In the animal kingdom, this form is often found in water birds and their young, e.g. B. in geese (hence the name).

Single file in everyday life

Groups of children are often led around in a clear single file, as the children can stay together so well and none of them get lost. In gymnastics lessons, the single file trains the sense of community and common coordination.

March to a line in formal service or a rifle line in the field - "single file" in the military

This form of march is not used in the military . The march to a row is only used in the terrain if this is necessary due to terrain conditions such as forest or mountain pass. It is generally dangerous because troops march long distances apart and are more vulnerable to attack, have poorer communication skills, and move more slowly because delays affect the people behind them. In the case of longer marches of large troop units, as happened in ancient campaigns through the mountains, taking breaks from the march was problematic because the fighters arriving later had less time to relax and a reform of the marching order takes more time. In addition, large units of troops can be stopped by relatively few attackers if they block bottlenecks or clear obstacles. The advantage of a numerical superiority cannot then be used optimally by the marchers. So sometimes long detours have been accepted in order to avoid goose marches.

Goose marches have the advantage that an opponent can hardly estimate the number of people marching. Particularly in the case of groups marching frontally towards the enemy, the enemy can only visually assess the strength after the order has been broken. In modern wars, minefields can be traversed single file if a path is paved at the beginning of the series that the rest of the participants follow. Another advantage is that if a grenade hits, fewer soldiers are affected than if the marching order is tight.
