Gardens (Holland House)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The gardens of Holland House are a garden on the Scottish Orkney island of Papa Westray . In 2001 they were included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category C. In addition, together with Holland House and other external buildings , they form a category B monument ensemble.

history

Soldier Thomas Traill bought the lands on Papa Westray in 1637. In the mid-17th century he built the oldest parts of Holland House. Traill made his fortune in the kelp industry (see also brown algae # use ). The property was inherited over generations within the family and, with the exception of one phase between 1886 and 1928, remained in their possession until 1952. The gardens date from the 1830s and are thus younger than the last expansion stage of Holland House.

description

The gardens are just east of Holland House's storage buildings, off the road. A quarry stone wall encloses the elongated area, which is divided lengthways by another wall in the middle. From the north side, two wooden gates on the outside lead onto the site, one of which may have been added or changed later. The same applies to the gates through the central partition wall. Another entrance at the western end of the south side is blocked today. Two chimneys tower up on the fenced-in area, which may have served to heat the greenhouses along the wall. It is not clear whether it was ever operated or was only set up as an ornament. The greenhouse is entered through a partially glazed wooden door. A small boiler room is set up on the north side.
