Guest house of the Bentzelschen Hof
The Bentzelschen Hof guest house , built on the Haus zum Vogelgesang property, is a Baroque building on Karmeliterplatz in Mainz .
The construction
The baroque building, which was completely destroyed in the Second World War in 1942 and rebuilt from 1967 to 1970 , originally dates from 1741.
There is evidence of a previous building from 1594. The court chancellor Jakob Bentzel von Sternau had it built as a guest house for the Bentzel court from the noble family of Bentzel zu Sternau and Hohenau.
His son Anselm Franz Freiherr von Bentzel , who emerged as the curator and reorganizer of the University of Mainz after the Jesuit order was abolished, also lived here.
Equipment
A Madonna figure decorates the corner of the house facing Christofstrasse. The inscription above the entrance reads: FRATERNA POSUIT CONCORDIA DIVINA SERVET PROVIDENTIA (fraternal unity built it, divine Providence may preserve it).
