Géza Gábor Simon

Géza Gábor Simon (born May 1, 1947 in Budapest ) is a music and record historian, music journalist, producer and music librarian. The recognized discographer has created an extensive thematic library, particularly on the European and Hungarian roots of jazz.

1961-65 he attended the Budapest Egressy Gábor high school. With the help of two musicological scholarships from the Soros Foundation (2 years and 1 year) , he spent the years 1988–90 studying Hungarian jazz history in Austria, West Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland, supplemented by further research in the Budapest capital Archives, in the National Archives and in private collections. He has been systematically publishing the results of his research since 1990.

Simon has been musically committed since 1964. In the years 1967-97 he designed programs for new jazz and gramophone record editions as music editor for the Hungarian radio . Since 1970 he has published numerous articles on jazz in over 50 Hungarian, Austrian, German and Polish journals in Hungarian, German and English. He also worked as an editor, producer, copywriter, translator and case designer on the publication of around 150 records and CDs (jazz, classical and contemporary music). From 1985–87 he worked for Hungaroton Archívum, and from 1987–89 artistic director of the first private record publishing company he helped initiate in Hungary called Pannonton. Since 1991 he has also headed the Hungarian Society for Jazz Research, the only organization in the world to research the national jazz history. Since 2006 he has been editor of the portal Jazzkutatas.eu .

Life's work

In the two decades around the turn of the millennium, he published an average of one specialist book per year. He organized relevant events and gave series of lectures in music libraries, schools and clubs on a wide variety of topics in music history. He was often a guest on radio and television programs in Hungary and Austria. In total he gave almost five thousand lectures.
