The Göhrener Viaduct

The Göhrener Viaduct is a railway bridge on the Neukieritzsch – Chemnitz line in the Göhren district, south of Wechselburg in Saxony .

Along with the Elster and Göltzschtal bridges, the Göhrener Viaduct is one of the most impressive German bridges from the early days of railway construction . It spans the valley of the Zwickauer Mulde together with the Muldentalbahn with a height of 68 meters, partly in two floors .

The length is 381 m, originally 512 m with 12 (originally 21) openings at the top, the largest span of an arch is 16 m. The masonry occupies a volume of 55,514 m³. By backfilling the arches at the ends of the viaduct, the bridge was shortened to 381 m during renovation work between 1982 and 1986.

The foundation stone was laid on May 27, 1869, the completion in June 1871. The construction costs of the bridge amounted to 1.2 million thalers (3.6 million marks ).

The architects were the engineers Clauss, the builder of the Hetzdorf viaduct , and Bake. Two plaques at the top of the bridge commemorate the engineers. Construction began with 4,000 to 5,000 workers, including 1,000 masons who were mostly Italian. 340 horses were used to transport the building materials. The granite came from the area, such as the light granite from Fischheim near Wechselburg and Markersdorf and the reddish granite from near Göhren, as well as the Rochlitz porphyry .

The road runs along the left bank of the river under the viaduct, the Muldentalbahn on the right.
