The Göttingen International Ethnographic Film Festival ( GIEFF ), from 2016 German International Ethnographic Film Festival, is a film festival in the field of ethnographic film. The focus of the festival is on cultural studies and documentary films on current topics in ethnology, cultural and social anthropology, sociology and, increasingly, related subjects and subject areas. Ethnographic films from all over the world are presented.

history

The festival was founded in 1993 by the Institute for Scientific Film (later renamed IWF Knowledge and Media ). From 1994 it took place every two years, alternating with the Freiburg film forum , during the Ascension week in May in Göttingen. In 2007 the association GIEFF eV was founded, which took over the organization of the film festival. In 2016 the festival took place for the first time in both Göttingen and Koblenz. In 2017 the festival was renamed the “German International Ethnographic Film Festival”. This paved the way for it to take place in another city, such as B. 2018 in Koblenz.

aims

The aim is to collect new national and international productions and present them to a broad audience. The presentations are accompanied by discussions that promote a deeper understanding and intercultural dialogue . The GIEFF values:

  • innovative (documentary) cinematic approaches
  • Productions that are characterized by special closeness and insight
  • the cinematic examination of current cultural and social processes
  • Contributions from filmmakers from non-western countries
  • Productions that are realized outside of television
  • Promotion of young talent through a student film competition

Promotion of young talent

Promoting the next generation is important to the organizers. The student competition ( Student Competition therefore) is a focal point of the festival. The Student Award is presented by a three-person jury of experts.

Communication and discussion

The festival is a meeting point for students, teachers and filmmakers from the social and cultural sciences as well as from the field of documentary film. Cross-regional networking is essential for the festival. Traveling GIEFF has become part of the festival. GIEFF is a member of the European coordination CAFFE - Coordingating Anthropological Film Festivals in Europe.
