Gúbretha Caratniad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gúbretha Caratniad [ 'guvːrʴeθa' karadnʴiað ] ("The false judgments of Caratnias") is the name of a collection of deviating judgments in the Central Irish language . Probably originated around 800 AD, it has come down to us in a collective manuscript from the 12th century.

The work names 51 judgments that are attributed to Judge Caratnia, the legal advisor to King Conn Cétchathach . These judgments, which include all legal branches, differ from the usual traditional Irish legal norms. The interplay between justice and the throne and the importance of the king as the final judicial authority are explicitly mentioned.
