Günther Bräunig

Günther Bräunig (born October 10, 1955 in Wiesbaden ) is CEO of KfW .

Life

Bräunig studied law and economics at the Universities of Mainz and Dijon from 1975 to 1980 . From 1980 to 1982 he did his doctorate at the University of Mainz. From 1981 to 1983 he was a trainee lawyer at the Wiesbaden Regional Court.

The doctor of law joined the KfW in 1989 after working for Commerzbank and Airbus . He held various positions within the bank and was appointed to the Management Board on October 1, 2006. From August 1, 2007 to October 31, 2008, he was CEO of IKB Deutsche Industriebank AG . During this period, his mandate as a board member of KfW was suspended. He unexpectedly took over the head of the IKB at short notice from Stefan Ortseifen , who was dismissed because the company had got into considerable difficulties due to bad speculation with badly secured American mortgage loans. According to Bafin boss Jochen Sanio , bankruptcy threatened the biggest banking crisis since 1931, when a national economic crisis developed due to insufficient liquidity of the banks.

From September to December 2017, Bräunig was Deputy CEO of KfW. On January 1, 2018, he took over the role of CEO of the bank.

Bräunig is married and has two children.
