Local freight transport permit ~ 1989

Since October 6, 1931, local freight transport up to 50 km has required a permit and demonstrable specialist knowledge.

With the GüKG amended on May 31, 1992, factory and commercial goods transport was expanded from 50 to a radius of 75 km. The local traffic zone was within a radius of 75 km from the registered location of the truck. It was also possible to define several local centers in communities with over 100,000 inhabitants or an area of more than 100 km². In the case of newly organized communities, up to three local centers could be determined. This was important for the border area in Germany, as it could be better reached for cross-border transport in international long-distance freight traffic without a license .

Today, in the freight transport industry, local freight transport is used as a term when it comes to day trips. The distribution and collection of individual goods is primarily carried out around the location of a freight forwarding company in local transport, where the groupage warehouse or the logistics centers are located. The distribution of fresh goods to branches of retail chains is also organized.

As a result of the amendment of the GüKG, the abolition of the quota for long-distance freight transport and cabotage transport came into force on July 1, 1998. Thus, the distinction between long-distance, local and moving goods was abandoned. The previous separation of works traffic and commercial road haulage was retained.
