The company operates in the United States, Canada , the United Kingdom and South Africa and currently operates over 118 facilities worldwide. In these institutions around 81,000 inmates are currently cared for by over 17,000 employees. The company was founded in 1984 and, along with the Management and Training Corporation and CoreCivic , is one of the largest American service providers in the prison industry . In 2010, GEO acquired competitor Cornell Companies , which was one of the largest prison operators in the United States with sales of around $ 400 million.
