The class C30-7 is a six-axle diesel locomotive made by GE Transportation Systems . It was built between 1977 and 1983 as the successor to the GE U30C for American railroad companies. The series is part of the manufacturer's GE Dash 7 product series . It was the direct competitor to the EMD SD40 .

variants

C30-7A

50 copies of the basic version were sold to Conrail as the C30-7A . Instead of the 16-cylinder engine, these had a 12-cylinder engine. It performed the same but used less fuel. This can be seen from the outside through 6 instead of 8 doors on each side of the locomotive. The C30-7A was manufactured in May and June 1984.

C30-7Ai

This variant was a preparation of the C30-7A version for resale to the Estonian railway company EVR ( Eesti Raudtee ).

C30-M

Based on the C30-7Ai was in Estonia from Operail in cooperation with CZ Loko a locomotive rebuilt completely. Only the frame and chassis were reused from the original locomotive. After successful tests, it was put into regular service in 2018. After a total of three prototypes had been rebuilt, CZ Loko made four complete packages available for the further modernization program in 2019. Due to the success, six more were ordered in 2020, which are to be delivered by 2021.

In January 2019, a leasing contract for the export of two machines was signed between Operail and a Ukrainian company.

Mission history

Use in Australia

The Australian rail company Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia bought twelve former Conrail C30-7A locomotives in 2001. Their chassis were used to replace the New South Wales class 442 locomotives, which became the GL class . These vehicles have been in service in Australia since 2003.

Use in Estonia

In 2003, 19 locomotives of the C30-7A variant of the Conrail were renewed and sold to Estonia under the model designation C30-7Ai. There they were used by the (then private) railway company EVR ( Eesti Raudtee ). The locomotives became part of the 1500 class with the road numbers 1558–1576.

After the nationalization and splitting of Eesti Raudtee into network operators and freight transport companies, the machines are now part of Operail (formerly EVR Cargo). In 2018, the first locomotive was completely modernized, and others were to follow. Since then, this has been listed as the C30-M variant.
