The small GPS receiver GPS I of Garmin (Switzerland / USA) was around 1991, the major product of miniaturized GPS - handsets . On the slightly more than thumb-sized display you could u. a. Select the GPS satellites to be measured and thus estimate the achieved accuracy of the location determination .

The similarly large successor device GPS II (1995/96) already had some functions for displaying mapped waypoints, also in selectable scales.

As one of the first miniaturized outdoor satellite navigation devices , it had a 6-channel receiver and was therefore able to receive more satellites than the competing products e.g. B. from Magellan . Despite limited localization accuracy, it has already been used in geodetic and geotechnical projects at some universities.
