from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

GRIB ( English GRIdded Binary as an abbreviation for version 1 , General Regularly-distributed Information in Binary form as an abbreviation for version 2) is a standardized, compressed binary data format that is commonly used in meteorology to provide historical and forecast weather data to save. It is based on a rectangular grid whose grid points the geographic coordinates are known. The standard is defined by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for basic systems, known under the number GRIB FM 92-IX, described in the WMO Manual, code no.306 .

This format is of practical importance for weather and current forecasts in shipping and for sports sailors as well as in air traffic control (transmission of high-altitude wind forecasts).
