The GTR-18 or DGTR-18 Smokey SAM is a simple and cheap surface to air developed in the early 1980s missile (SAM, Surface-to-air missile). It is still used to this day to simulate shelling by surface-to-air defense in war exercises.

The name of the missile was changed from GTR-18 to DGTR-18 in the early 1990s in order to distinguish it from "real" military missiles. The D stands for "Dummy" (German: Attrappe ).

construction

The body of the missile is mainly made of phenolic paper and expanded polystyrene . A hit is therefore completely harmless to an aircraft. The rocket is relatively small with a length of 38 cm and has a solid fuel propulsion system .

construction

The complete "Smokey SAM Simulator System" consists of the rockets themselves and other components:

Launch pad
There are two versions with one or four launch tubes (called LMU-23 / E or LMU-24 / E). The launching devices are small, transportable and can also be set up on rough terrain.
Tracking radar
An AN / VPQ-1 tracking radar that mounts on a vehicle. It is used to simulate the intrusion by an enemy radar.
