Procession of gifts

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The procession of gifts is the introduction to the celebration of the Eucharist in the Catholic Holy Mass and opens the preparation of the gifts .

The gifts ( hosts , chalices , measuring jugs with wine and water) are ceremoniously brought into the chancel by members of the congregation, acolytes or communion helpers . This small procession is supposed to symbolize the gifts and wishes of the congregation that are brought to God in this way. Where a collection is requested, it is collected during the preparation of the offering. According to the general introduction to the Roman Missal, the offering procession (to which the collection also belongs) should be completed before the offering prayer begins .

During the procession of the gifts and the preparation of the gifts, the choral schola or the congregation sings the offertory . The acolytes prepare the altar for the Eucharist and assist the priest in washing hands . In the bowl with the hosts there is often a larger celebration host (otherwise it is brought separately on a paten ).
