Gabriel I of Constantinople

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gabriel I (Greek Γαβριήλ Α΄; † 1596 ) was Orthodox Bishop of Thessaloniki (before 1593–1596) and Patriarch of Constantinople (1596).

He took part in the Orthodox Synod in Constantinople in 1593, which, among other things, confirmed the establishment of the Patriarchate of Moscow. In February 1596 he was elected Patriarch of Constantinople after his predecessor Matthew II had been deposed because of a non-canonical election.

His successor was elected in September. Gabriel probably died shortly before that.
