Theophanes I. Karykes
Theophanes I. Karykes (Greek Θεοφάνης Α΄ Καρύκης; † March 26, 1597 , Constantinople , Ottoman Empire ) was Orthodox Bishop of Philippopolis (1585–1592) and Athens (1592–1596) and Patriarch of Constantinople (1596–1597).
Life
He grew up in Athens. In 1578 he was Logothet . In 1585 he became Bishop of Philippopolis after his predecessor Theoleptus became Patriarch of Constantinople. In 1592 he became Bishop of Athens and in 1593 took part in the Synod in Constantinople.
In September 1596 he was elected Patriarch of Constantinople. In December he had to give up the office again, but was re-elected on February 26, 1597 after 6,000 gold coins had been paid for him. He died on March 26th (Holy Saturday).
Theophanes wrote liturgical hymns and texts on church music .
