The central archive of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate is the central repository of Protestant tradition in the Palatinate . The archive is housed in Speyer in the listed building at Am Domplatz 6 .

The central archive is located south of the Speyer Cathedral and is located on the site of a baroque palace built by cathedral dean Hermann Lothar von Auwach († 1722) on the ruins of the old Schlegelhof , which later belonged to the cathedral scholaster Karl Joseph von Mirbach (1718–1798) and is in the city was commonly known as the Mirbach House . From this previous building, only the gatehouse with towers, the so-called Auwach balustrade (1702) , remains today . On Good Friday 1277, the cathedral dean Albert von Mußbach was murdered here.

The current building was built in 1902 according to plans by the architect Georg Maxon as the district archive (state archive) of the Palatinate and later became the property of the Protestant regional church.

Since 1957, the central archive has been commissioned to set up a church history library and "Palatinate Library". In addition to the archival function for the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate (Protestant regional church) , it manages a large inventory on the topic of the German East Asia Mission . This special collection includes 13,000 volumes, 30 magazines, 3,000 glass pictures, 1,500 photos, 1,000 clichés and more than 14 meters of files.

The director of the archive is Dr. Gabriele Stüber (2020). The archive is opposite the Palatinate Historical Museum ; an archive shop offers reprints of historical postcards and greeting cards, specialist books and brochures.

Legal basis

The legal basis is the law on the safeguarding and use of church archives in the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate (Protestant regional church) - archives law of 7 May 1999 and the regulations for the storage, segregation and destruction of documents from church offices (storage and cassation regulations) of 23 February 1990.
