Gaetano Porcasi (* 1965 in Partinico (Palermo)) is a contemporary Sicilian painter whose works deal in large part with the history of the struggle against the Sicilian Mafia.

Training and teaching

Gaetano Porcasi received his diploma from the "Istituto statale d'Arte" in Monreale (state institute of the arts), his university degree and several awards from the "Accademia delle Belle Arti", the academy of fine arts in Palermo, in the field of painting. He began to work as a lecturer at the "Istituto Statale d'Arte di Sassari" (state institute of the arts in Sassari) and later continued teaching at the "Liceo Artistico di Tempio Pausania" (artistic high school in Tempio Pausania) and at the "Istituto Statale d 'Arte di Alghero "(State Institute of Arts in Alghero). When he returned to Sicily, he taught at the "Istituto Statale d'Arte di Monreale", where he had studied himself, and at the "Liceo Scientifico“ Santi Savarino ”" (scientific high school) in his hometown of Partinico.

Works

The unique use and composition of the colors is typical of Porcasi's works, which is also evident in the numerous landscapes of Sicily. In addition, he also deals to a large extent with historical, social and political issues.

In particular, the "Memorie" exhibition in Corleone, which tells the story of the fight against the Mafia from 1947 to the present day, receives recognition. It is supposed to draw attention to the acts of violence of the Mafia and thus makes a contribution to the resistance against this organized crime.

Mention and recognition

For his services in the artistic representation of the history and events of the struggle of the Sicilians against the Mafia, Porcasi received Corleone's honorary citizenship in 2007. In addition to other recognitions, e.g. B. by the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano or the writer Carlo Lucarelli , it was mentioned in some well-known artist magazines and catalogs such as "Arte", "Arte Moderna" and the "Catalogo dell'arte moderna" (catalog of modern art) as well as in the Book "La Sicilia delle stragi" by Giuseppe Carlo Marino.
