Gail Jefferson
Gail Jefferson (born April 22, 1938 in Iowa City , † February 21, 2008 in Rinsumageest , Netherlands ) was an American linguist . She shaped the development of conversation analysis , together with Emanuel Schegloff and Harvey Sacks .
The system for transcribing spoken language that is widely used today , the v. a. used in English-language research. According to reports, Jefferson is said to have designed and made the first transcriptions on Sacks' instructions; he handed her tape recordings with the words "write down what you hear".
