Möderndorf Castle (2012)

The Möderndorf Castle is located in the center of the village of the same name on the right bank of Gail , about two kilometers south of Hermagor in the municipality of Hermagor-Pressegger See .

history

This castle, steeped in history, reflects the history of the central Gail valley. Located in the middle of the village of Möderndorf, it stands out due to its cube-shaped, three-story design. Möderndorf first appears in the parish bar of Hermagor in 1331 . Around 1458 the castle was owned by Simon Weidegger who was a feudal man of the Gorizia Count Palatine . Through the Peace of Pusarnitz in 1460 it fell to Emperor Friedrich III. The Habsburgs later lent it to the Counts of Salamanca-Ortenburg . After several changes of ownership (Lords von Rechbach, Wiedmann), Prince Johann Ferdinand Porcia bought the property on October 8, 1662. The Princes Porcia moved the district court from the dilapidated Grünburg to the castle. In the meantime the Waldner family lived in the castle. The merchant Georg Essl II acquired Möderndorf Castle on January 16, 1982 and made it available to the Gailtaler Heimatmuseum association for the establishment of a local museum. He thus continued the work of his father Georg Essl I , who had already started collecting folkloric and cultural-historical objects from the region around 1900. With the support of the State of Carinthia, the municipality of Hermagor Presseggersee and, to a large extent, the Essl family (who donated the castle to the municipality of Hermagor), this historic building was completely renovated from 2000 onwards. Today it houses the exhibition Gailtaler Heimatmuseum and is the venue for a number of cultural events every year.

Building

The castle is a cubic, four-story building with an L-shaped floor plan with a cut-out northwest corner. It should have received its final form in the middle of the 16th century. Several architectural styles can be recognized. The building has two portals, one on the north side and the other on the west side, both arched and chamfered. Above the west portal there is a coat of arms of the Porcia painted by Franz Seraphim .
